Character Counter
Count characters, words, lines and bytes in any text as you type.
Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded.
About this tool
Paste or type text and the counts update instantly: characters with and without spaces, words, lines, paragraphs and UTF-8 byte size. Useful for post limits, form fields, essays and metadata fields with a hard character budget.
Questions & answers
- How are words counted?
- Runs of non-space characters separated by whitespace count as one word each. For Chinese and Japanese text, which has no spaces, use the character count instead.
- Why is the byte count larger than the character count?
- Bytes are measured in UTF-8, where accented Latin letters take 2 bytes and most CJK characters take 3, while ASCII takes 1.
- What does “character” mean here?
- The count uses Unicode code points, not grapheme clusters. A combining mark or a multi-code-point emoji may count separately.
