Vector Storage Calculator

Estimate the storage a vector collection needs, including metadata and replicas.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded.

About this tool

Enter how many vectors you have, their dimensions and precision, and get the raw storage, the metadata, an index allowance and the replicated total. Useful for sizing a vector database before you load it.

Questions & answers

How is the raw size calculated?
Vector count multiplied by dimensions multiplied by bytes per component. One million 1536-dimension vectors at FP32 is 6.14 GB before metadata or index.
Is the index figure accurate?
No — it is the percentage you enter. Real index overhead depends on the type: an HNSW graph stores neighbour lists per vector, IVF stores centroids, and product quantization replaces the vectors entirely. Check your engine's documentation.
Does lower precision save storage?
Directly: INT8 is a quarter of FP32 for the same vectors. Many engines support it with little retrieval loss, but that trade-off is yours to test.
